12ICAL participants are expected to make their own arrangements for accommodation. A wide range of places to stay encompassing just about every conceivable budgetary level is available in Bali. In Denpasar itself, there are several budget hotels within easy walking distance of the conference venue, and a larger variety of hotels further afield. At the Sanur beach resort, which, barring traffic jams, is a 15-20 minute ride from the conference venue, there are also numerous budget hotels, as well as lots of very luxurious places to stay. The following links are to some of the upper-end options in Sanur.
http://www.sanurbeachhotelbali.com The conference organizers will provide a pick-up service to and from the above hotels (which of course you will be welcome to make use of even if you are staying elsewhere in Sanur). Mid-range Hotels in Sanur area
Low and Mid-range hotels near Universitas Udayana in Denpasar There is a wide choice of budget and mid-range accommodation, totalling several hundred rooms, within a 5-15 minute walking distance of the conference venue at Universitas Udayana in Denpasar. A small cluster of hotels is located to the west of the main university gate near the corner of Jl Diponegoro and Jl Serma Kawi, while a larger variety of hotels is situated furthr north, past Jl Dewi Sartika. Some of the hotels are in traditional Balinese style, with cottages facing a central courtyard, while others are more modern. The neighborhood is typical urban Indonesian, with shopping malls, food stalls, and busy streets, but also quiet little alleyways with peaceful and secluded courtyards. The following three hotels are fancy international style, in an upper middle price range:
Grand Santhi
Santosa City Hotel
Hotel Puri Ayu The following hotels are budget to mid range Indonesian-style, and are listed in order of increasing distance from Universitas Udayana:
Hotel Artha
Hotel Rai
Hotel Warta
Hotel Damai
Hotel Ratu
Hotel Viking
Wisma Purnama The following map shows the location (in red) of the hotels listed above:
Key to map:
A - Hotel Artha U - Universitas Udayana: the conference venue Of course, it is always nice to make hotel reservations well in advance; however, many hotels in Indonesia simply do not deal seriously with reservations more than a couple of months in advance, and when prospective guests try to make such reservations, the hotels simply shrug them off with a pro forma "Yes you have a reservation" or "No we're fully booked" when in reality they haven't even started taking reservations. The moral is, if the hotel says you have a reservation, don't take it for granted and keep on checking; but if they say they're fully booked, don't panic and keep on trying. Things pretty much always work out well in the end. For hotel listings, traveller reviews, and links to booking websites, tripadvisor is a useful resource.
